The Mercury Mountaineer is a somewhat higher-end version of the Ford Explorer. However, both models are built on the same platform. Both feature more safety and technology features than ever before and Explorer also features an Eddie Bauer premium trim level. The Mountaineer was freshened in 2006. The '07 Mountaineer also receives 4 1/2 out of 5 Power Circles in our firm's initial quality ratings--which means that new owners indicate that overall mechanical quality is nearly among the best and design quality is better than most. Explorer's Power Circle initial quality ratings, however, are lower than Mountaineer's--it generally receives 3 of 5 Power Circles. The base price for the Explorer begins below $26,000 and the Mountaineer's sticker price is slightly higher. They are one in the same. The Mercury might have "better" options as Ford is the lowest, then Mercury, then Lincoln in regards to standard options and upgrades. The Mercury might look more aesthically pleasing (outside and inside) but everything else should be the same: engine/transmission, suspension, driveability, etc.
BTW: they are not cars... they are SUVs
:-P

Usually comparing different cars is like comparing apples to oranges - intangible personal preference and use weighs in. Comparing the Explorer and Mountaineer, however, is apples to apples. The are identical vehicles made by the same manufacturer with only mild aesthetic differences.

there is no mechanical differance to either,
the upscale type options of one are more or less standard on the other.
if purchasing used the 5.o V8 versions of both are best left alone [marginal snow car, no low range on transfer case and eat front drive shafts]
the V6 versions have proven reliable, capable, and relativly fuel efficiant. both in snow and in real off road situations.

They're virtually the same car, just different front end and taillights. Merc. is slightly more upscale, i.e. more expensive. Looks slightly classier, but Explorer is better for the money.

They are the same car. Same engine, transmission, gas mileage, chassis, AWD system. The Mercury is the luxury version.

as they answered....they are pretty much the same....but seeing that they are Ford's, you can't say either of them are any good. Ford's suv's are not that great.....GM's newer model SUV's are the best of the big three these days....
