I mean when it's actually tested and all, not just what the company says but when it's actually tested on the road.

Unless you're driving in the city for most of the time the VW Golf TDI gets the best mileage. I think you call it the Rabbit in America. Hybrids are good but if you push 'em hard they'll do worse than a diesel. Diesel also has inherently low CO2 (similar to hybrids but again depends on the conditions) emissions over gasoline engines although they do emit PM10s that are thought to be linked to lung cancer. However, in the EU at least all diesels will have to be fitted with a particulate filter which basically burns these nasty buggers before releasing them out through the exhaust system.
We do have smaller and more economical cars in the EU but I don't think they're for sale in the US. The (newest) Mini is pretty good also as it's got a stop-go function where the engine turns off the minute the wheels stop moving. When you hit the accelerator it starts effortlessly and seamlessy. The Mini diesel will not be coming to the US. I hope this answer has been helpful.
PS: Manual gearboxes are almost always more economical than autoboxes.

The Company does test it. That is how they come up with the numbers.
The most fuel efficient car is the Honda Insight. The first hybrid car. The best highway gas mileage it could get is 66mpg. The best city gas mileage it could get is 60mpg. They get this gas mileage by driving at the speed limit and accelerating slow and keeping a steady foot on the gas pedal. Probably the average is 58mph with the way people really drive.

I'm not so sure about that, so many cars are now being made with great gas mileage.....owing to the fact that gas prices are outrageous!
I've heard that Toyota's have great mileage and some Honda's too.
I can't wait to read all the responses.

I'll say Proton Savvy Lite, (or Renault Clio outside Malaysia) for you only spend about 6 sen (approx. 2 US cents) per km.
