Actually, Craig, you're absolutely correct. When Williams oppened his Baseball Hitters Hall of Fame in '94, these were the first 20 hitters he put in. The time frame is why the active hitters aren't on the list.

Actually, the reason Pete is not on the list is because the author (Ted Williams) didn't feel he was one of the top 20 hitters of all time.

And I don't know about removing Harry Heilmann. A career .342 hitter with a career OBA over .400 who won several batting titles and drove in 100 plus runs many times would be hard to remove from the list.

The comments about Ted Williams should give it away.

Williams isn't on this list because.....it's his list of the top 20 hitters of all-time.

There's obviously some bias against the "modern" players, with Schmidt the only one worthy of the list. Or, maybe Ted just felt that the 1970s-1990s were a time of weak hitters. I'm surprised to see Mize so high on the list, but it's tough to argue with Mr. Williams, who could probably hit better in his last few years alive than I ever could in my life.

I believe that any list of all-time great hitters has to include Tony Gwynn. A career .330+ hitter. Also, I don't know if a lot of the players on the list would be quite as effective in todays game. Having to face one pitcher for nine innings is a bit easier than facing 3-4 pitchers, that remain fresh, in nine innings. Although every player on this list were the dominate hitters of their eras.

In my opinion, Ted Williams would have to be on my list, probably in spot #2 or #3.
As much as it would pain me to say normally, Bonds has to be here, discounting the effect of synthetics, probably around #12. Mays should be ahead of a number of guys.
Mize, Kiner would be replaced by Rodriguez and Bonds.
Possibly adding in someone like Gwynn to the mix replacing a guy like Heilman.

Schmidt should be higher, and a case could be made for George Brett as well.

So, I would say
Ruth
Williams
Gehrig
Hornsby
Cobb
Mays
Foxx

would be my top 8

I do believe Ted Williams deserves atleast a number 3 spot. That list is completely off. Stan Musial over Hank Aaron?

What?

I'd add Ted Williams, Arod and Bonds. Actually I don't agree with the order of the list, but I do agree with the names on it. I'd put Williams #1. I'd put Bonds between Musial and Jackson and I'd put ARod between Mantle and Speaker, for now. Bonds is done, but ARod isn't. Course, Ted Williams is frozen, so I guess he could make a comeback in 50 years or so.

This is a great list, but they definitely need to add Ted Williams if it is best hitters of all time.

Craig is right, that's Ted's list.

Once again $C-Note$ types without thinking. Come on, who wouldn't have Williams on a list of the top 20 hitters ever? Use you head.

Before he died, he said he would've put Tony Gwynn in his top 20, along with Bonds and Griffey.

That is a good list. I agree. However, if the list was in 2007, I am sure that Tony Gwynn would be on the list. Thank you dryyankee30, for bringing up Charlie Hustle.
