I let them sit where they want with the possible exceptions of those who select seats in the back of the room. Set changes are made throughout the term as necessary.

I allow my students to choose their own seats. I teach all seniors so it only seems appropriate to allow them to do so. Once they have chosen a seat, I send around a seating chart. It becomes their assigned seat until I change them around due to behavior issues that arise later in the semester.

Personally, I arrange students into heterogeneously mixed groups based upon three factors:
1. According to their multiple-intelligences and learning style
2. Their ability levels
3. Gender and ethnicity
For example I might place students who are medium and medium-high ability levels and who are primarily logical/mathematical or rhythmic learners together as one group provided that the group is heterogenous in regard to gender and ethnicity.
