Let's do a little multiplication. Lay it out like this on a sheet of paper:

1 7
x 3
___

Now, 3 x 7 = 21 (you simply have to grant this) so write the 1 under the 3, because that's your ones place, and put the 2 above the 1, which is your tens place, and you get the following:

2
1 7
x 3
___
...1

Now 3 x 1 = 3, and you add the 2 to get 5. Place that in your tens place to get the following:

2
1 7
x 3
___
5 1

The final answer is 51. The same method can be used to multiply numbers of any size, and even numbers with decimal points (but we'll leave that explanation for another time.)
