Elizabeth Kostova's 'The Historian' is really good and would lend itself to book-club discussion fairly nicely. It's a vampire story and it's infinitely better and more sophisticated than Twilight, which, admittedly, wasn't that great. Kostova's vampires actually act like vampires. There's a lot of suspense, a little blood, some romance, vampires (well, of course), and a cross-country European "scavenger hunt" of sorts-- think Dan Brown meets Bram Stoker.
I'm not in a formal book club right now, although I'd like to start one. It's more this thing where my friends and I decide to read a book at the same time, or one of us reads a book and loves it and then harasses the other friends until they read it too. It's fun. :)

"Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" is a wonderful book. I read it just prior to reading a Thousand Splendid Suns. If you are really into the novels of culture, you should read this one.

Does your book club have a theme?
Try "A Simple Plan" by Scott Smith. It's a pretty interesting character study that my boyfriend read for his mystery book club, then he had me read it. It has a movie based off of it, but you should definitely read the book.
