why would cause this reaction on your skin?

You have oxidized the proteins in your skin with the nitric acid, and there is no way to wash it out. The only way to get it out is to let the skin die, and let it be replaced by fresh skin.

In junior school, decades ago, we used to test for the presence of protein in foods by using millon's reagent, which is a strong solution of nitric acid, with mercury dissolved in the acid. The presence of protein was confirmed by the deveopment of a red colouring. Nitric acid, alone, does a similar thing to skin when it is of a high concentration. 1M HNO3 solution is too weak; but much stronger concentrations indicate the presence of protein by the yellow colouration. So she got strong nitric acid on her skin, and she has protein in her skin.
