i don't think they are helping the environment, they just aren't destroying it. and if you get one you dont have to learn how to parallel park, you just pull up to the curb. =) i think they are good for driving around the city but not for the freeway. big trucks cant see you and it wouldn't be fun if you got hit.

They are supposedly safe, as safe as a car could be at that size. In America, though, they'd stand no chance with a semi or SUV. That's part of the reason why I don't think they'll catch on as well here than in Europe. As for the enviroment, they are gas-efficient, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're good for the enviroment. Like a diesel, they get amazing gas mileage, but they are incredibly dirty and pollute a lot. If you live in a city with a lot of traffic and don't use it for anything other than a daily commute, then its great. But if you use it for anything more than that, it becomes less than practical. Also, if you have a family, its not practical, it only holds two people. With a car that size, no matter what anyone says, it will be small and cramped on long road-trips, so not really helpful there, either. In America, based on the average American's lifestyle, they are far below practical. I would recommend hybrids, though. We have a Ford Escape Hybrid and love it. It gets around 30-36 mpg, depending on how and where we drive it, and can fit a ton of stuff in the back, even with the seats up. We put the seats down once and were able to put in a bunch of wood, a few hoses, a hose holder thing, and a 4 foot fountain, all in one trip(they're 60/40 folding seats, we had the 60 down and had one person in the back, even with all of those things). So I'd suggest buying a Ford Hybrid, it has 4 wheel-drive, lots of space for anything, are comfortable for long distance trips, and get great gas mileage, considering that its a small SUV.

I agree with a couple other posters, they are a really cool car. I've had mine for a year now and absolutely love it. I've got the diesel model (Canadian) and can drive around town for a month on a little over $10 worth of fuel.

For errands and grocery runs I've got no complaints. I've put the contents of a Costco shopping cart in the back of the car. The new model that's coming out next year is supposed to be a bit larger than the one I've got now, so you might be able to fit a bit more in the back.

I have no concerns about safety in the car. It seems to be quite well built and designed. It's got a lot more interior room than it looks like it would have, and is very comfortable on long highway trips.

Very nice for driving back and forth to work, but not so good for errands, groceries, or passengers. I´d only get one as a second car and then only if I had a long urban commute.
