Bump Start Diesel

2017-01-09 13:43:41 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

Bump starting a diesel reminds me of using a "donkey engine" to start old caterpiller engines. Basically rolling a vehicle on its wheels to start it , using the electric starter, or a petrol powered donkey engine starting sysem all do the same thing; turn the engine over. The only type of vehicle that you would have trouble bump starting is one which uses electronic fuel injection, and your battery is 100% discharged. You still need some power to pump fuel to injectors whether petrol (gasoline), or diesel. This does not apply to mechanical injector pumps.

Yep, just like you would with a gasoline engine.

As for other replies, you can actually push start an automatic... If it is a model with a tailshaft mounted pump!!! The 727 Torqueflite 3-spd auto used in Dodge/Chrysler in the 60's could actually be push started when placed in gear. The tailshaft pump would couple the torque-convertor and spin the motor. I'm not sure but I think that there are some other model trannys that have a tailshaft mounted pump.

Due to the high compression of a diesel engine, letting out the clutch with the car rolling and in a low gear could result in a snapped drive belt. This is because the engine will try to spin over a lot faster than with the starter,so the extra shock could snap the belt or strip the belt teeth.

The answer is yes and no. I was a diesel mechanic for years. It's much better to pull start one than push start it. That way the driver of the running vehicle can see where he is going.

you can start a diesel with an auto trannie, but it requires more speed. look at your owners manual.

I have to do it with my diesel most mornings cause my battery and alternater are dodgy. Its not recommended for any type of engine to be bump started too many times tho but once in a blue moon wont hurt,

Use plenty of easy start, to help the glow plugs and it should start no probs.
As a matter of interest to other contributors, I have bumped an automatic by towing and had to reach about 30 mph. Not recommended.

As long as it is a manual, you will never start an automatic of by bumping it off. Harder than a petrol, but not impossible!
