It will be difficult for anyone to break Gretzky's scoring records ... unless the league increases the size of the nets as some NHL officials and team executives have discussed doing. This would probably increase scoring, but critics of the plan have pointed out that it would make any direct comparison of future and past scoring statistics unmeaningful.
The fellow who said that Brett Hull scored more goals than Gretzky is wrong. The most goals that the 'Golden Brett' ever scored in a season was 86 in 1990-91. He scored 741 goals in 1269 career games.
Gretzky's best goal-scoring season was in 1981-82 when he potted 92 goals. He scored 87 goals in 1983-84. His career goal total is 894 goals in 1487 games.
By the way, anyone who thinks that Gretzky and Lemieux didn't have to deal with interference or the 'trap' should watch a tape of the 3rd game of the finals of the 1987 Canada Cup tournament, one of the best games ever played. There was a ton of interference (and the referees didn't call any of it) what we would today call 'the trap' was also used.

I think Crosby will be great, possibly a Hall of Famer.

However, I think it's very early to make any comparisons.

Additionally, the economics of the NHL today are vastly different than 20-25 years ago, when Gretzky came into real prominence.

That meant teams were built to last and not lose so many players as free agents.

Also, you had no instigator rule. So, with a guy like Dave Semenko or Marty McSorely out there, nobody would mess with Gretzky. You can't say the same for Crosby and the Pens in today's NHL.

I don't think we will ever see a player like Gretzky again. Unless the rules and free agent programs change, and then it's only a possibility.

Gretzky had a better team around him and he also played during a time when goalies where still sucky and kicking at pucks. So that helped his point totals. Crosby maybe more talented, but the points wont exactly show it either. Crosby has to play against Brodeur 8 times a year, Dipeatro 8 times a year, Lunkqvist 8 times a year, and people like Miller and Ward multiple times throughout the year. He might get 4 or 5 points against someone like Lethonen or Biron a night, where he might get only 1 or 2 points against some of the best goalies in the history of the game. Point wise, no. Talent wise...he might be better. Honestly, it may be too early to tell. Ask again in 5 or 6 years.

Crosby won't come close to the numbers Gretzky put up......Nobody will. The NHL has changed too much, even with the new rules there are less goals than Gretzky's era. Come on, 50 goals in 39 games will never be even close to being touched by anyone. Crosby is great, but not as great as the 'Great One'.

Gretzky already had the better career. We'll all see about Crosby when the time comes.

Gretzky - Crosby's very good, but just doesn't have the kind of talent around him that Gretky had in his years with the Oilers.

Gretzky played in an era where he could fly around easily. Crosby constantly deals with traps and tough defense in the corners. He's going to be great, but I dont see him matching Gretzky or Lemeiux.

I think you're about 10 years premature in thinking like this. Many other supposed great players have fizzled and disappeared after a breif period of brilliance and Crosby may too. Fate is a tricky thing. Read about Howie Morenz. That will tell you how fickle life is. If Crosby is still around 10 years from now and he's in range of the Great One's records, then would be the time to ask this. For now, he's just a promising, talented kid with a lot of hockey-playing years ahead of him. Pass the popcorn.
