at 5 1/2 months old i doubt he is hitting himself hard enough to cause pain. Kids just do crazy things. Both of my daughters- at about 8 or 9 months figured out that if they stuck their fingers/hands down their throat that they would throw up. My oldest did this for almost 6 months! She would puke and laugh and think it was funny. I did not think it was so funny- but eventually she stopped. I wouldn't be worried about it- at 5 months babies are starting to realize that they have arms and legs and that they can control them.. sounds like he is just exercising his new knowledge!

Babies go through stages. Feelings that are new he will repeat alot until that gets old and he will find a new one. Babies can go through making sounds and faces(funny)But since he is hitting himself just dont laugh because this stage has become a game. Soon it will get old and move on to a differnt stage. Just remember he is a baby, he has not felt everything or herd funny noises the world is new to him.

It only appears that he is hitting himself. He is just exercising in a babies way. Just wait til he has a rattle or other things in his hand and watch him bop himself and cry. All natural for a baby. our first did this but our second one kicked everything really hard. Raising his legs up and driving them down. He is 9 months old now and his little legs are huge. I have long fingers and cant get my fingers 3/4 around his legs LOL.

Babies will do this to get attention, or to make you laugh or even giggle a bit. Don't worry, he doesn't want to die or anything. The next time he does it, just completely ignore him. Then he will see that you are not amused and he will find another way to make you laugh. (Hopefully a better way.)

I think he's just starting to get that he can move his hands. Don't worry, if he were hurting himself he would stop. It's entertaining to him. My son is 14 months and he just started banging his head on stuff (parenting books say this is normal). Kids are just weird sometimes.

Dont panic, It probabley started off bacause he couldnt co-ordanite his arms, but as he is learning, he knows this has made you laugh, so he thinks it is just a game,
Just ignore him when he does it. He will soon forget about it.
Good luck

I think that's normal. Don't encourage it, just tell him not to ... but my friend's baby used to gag herself for no reason. Also completely normal. I think it's their strange ways of getting to know how their body reacts to things, maybe. If it's really bad and leaving marks, you should probably see a doctor about it.Otherwise, it's most likely okay.

sounds like he has a game with you guys LOL, if you don't want him to do it, ignore when he does it, no attention for it and he will stop .....He would not hit himself to where it hurt tho. But maybe you could find something to avert his attention from it ....a different game so to speak...

Well, I think he is doing it now because he gets a rise out of you and the laughing makes me think he is doing it to be silly.
