So, unfortunately, with the way the music business is nowadays, some of the best bands never make it big, while other no-talent bands get fame & fortune heaped on them. Because of this, many very talented bands end up languishing around for years before finally breaking up because they never make it big.

With that being said, who are some of the best bands that, in your opinion, most people have never heard of, but should give a listen to? What makes the band so good, and who do they sound like? If they are no longer together, do you know why they broke up?

This can also be for a singer; it doesn't have to be a band. I'm not a big fan of commercial music, and I'm looking for new bands to get into.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. One band I love is Jump, Little Children. Sadly, they broke up around a year ago, but Jay Clifford (their lead singer & guitarist) now has a solo career. Zach Braff (of "Scrubs" and "Garden State" fame) called JLC his favorite new band after discovering them a while back. Their sound is a little hard to categorize, because it's changed over the years. To me, their best stuff was on the CD "Vertigo", which has a Radiohead meets Jeff Buckley feel to it. Jay Clifford has an amazing voice and is an extremely talented songwriter.

Anyway, check them out if you like that kind of stuff, and keep the suggestions coming!!

:)

Hey Darth, Great Question :) Dokken and Skid Row I mention as much as possible; me being an 80's hair band fan and all. Also, Alice Cooper is one of my favorite artists so I try to slip him in when appropriate. Other uncommonly heard bands would be: RTZ - Until Your Love Comes Back Around Little River Band - Lonesome Loser 38 Special - So Caught Up In You Ten Years After - Love Like A Man Lynch Mob - Through These Eyes Saigon Kick - Love Is On The Way Argent - Hold Your Head Up Y&T - Summertime Girls RATT - Lay It Down Quiet Riot - Metal Health and of course MCR... lol only kidding. Seriously though, I'd love to see more hair band's come up in conversation, but that's just my opinion. EDIT: 80's Man you ALWAYS answer the same way as me! A couple of the bands I listed I thought for sure NO ONE else would ever think to mention (RTZ and Saigon Kick just to name two) and you did! hahaha when will it end! LOL. Nice answers anyway... :) ********************* Sorry Darth, I went off on my own tangent and listed other not commonly heard of R&P bands. Give me some slack, it's Monday and a holiday and I'm stuck at work. To answer your question correctly, let me try again: Simple Minds: Don't You Forget About Me J Geils Band: Where Did Our Love Go Dokken: It's Not Love / Alone Again Skid Row:18 and Life / Monkey Business John Cougar Mellencamp: Minutes To Memories Billy Squier: Lonely Is The Night /The Stoke/Everybody Wants You Sammy Hagar: Both sides Now Saga: Don't Look Down / Starting All Over / Framed Alice Cooper: Dead Babies / Might As Well Be On Mars Bob Seger: Even Now / Fire Lake / Understanding

It depends what you like.

Super Furry Animals - great fast songs, great melodic songs, try 'Rings Around the World' and 'Guacomole' One of my top 5

The Dandy Warhols. If you like indie rock, this may very well become your favorite band.

Cursive - a somewhat cynical dark indie sound

Bedouin Soundclash - a very nice smooth reggae band

Minus the bear is a nice indie rock band.

Bassnectar is a MIND BLOWING Drum&Bass techno DJ

Michael Franti & Spearhead are just amazing - a progressive funk/hip hop/reggae sound, lots of different styles.

The Faint - MY FAVORITE BAND EVER -an indie rock band from Omaha that one day added a guy who could mix music so now they're a really neat Electro indie rock band.

Atom and his Package is silly electro (not techno) music heavy on the lyrics

Tiger Army - hard to describe, kind of a gothic southwestern style. A LITTLE BIT like AFI, but way better.

Slightly Stoopid - THE BEST reggae, i don't know if they're popular or not, but they were managed by Brad from Sublime before he died.

Shpongle - nice psychodelic ambient easy listening tribal jazz weird sounding stuff. Great for anyone that enjoys LSD.

The Rapture - dancy pop style

Pomeroy - a catchy funk sound

Lucky Boys Confusion - Kind of like a pop reggae sound, a little poppy, but not in a bad way, some songs suck, but some are amazing

Hard-Fi - some people love this band, some hate it. KInd of a rock sound, a tiny bit of electronic beat, indie style

Gorillaz. Yes, I know they're popular, but everyone should listen to Gorillaz.

Fischerspooner - melodic electric indie with lyrics

Eagle*Seagull - I like these guys a lot, but if you don't like it, you'll hate it. A weird indie style, they're dancy and chill, but kinda slow too. Pretty big in Europe. Get the song "Your Beauty is a knife i turn on my throat"

One of my favorite bands ever was Blur. In England they're pretty big, but they never got much attention over here in America, except for "Song 2", so they're unfortunately thought of as one-hit wonders. The lyrics are both intelligent and funny, the musicianship within the band is fantastic. They sound like The Kinks, The Jam, and even a little bit of The Smiths, all rolled into one band. They broke up in 2003 (I think) due to ego problems..but they recently met back together and were going to go into a studio. I haven't heard anything about a new album though.

Also check out Pulp, Interpol, White Rabbits, Animal Collective, Spoon, Mew, We Are Scientists, and 1990's.

It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://tr.im/61NFF

Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.

Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.

The band is "Over The Rhine" from Cincinnati Ohio.
They've been around since 1990, and have released 17 Cd's. Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist, the married couple at the heart of the band have recently been named to Paste magazine’s list of the "100 Best Living Songwriters"

The sound is kind of hard to pinpoint, but it expands beyond rock to encompass elements of country and jazz, with a rich sophistication to piano-led chamber ballads and jazz-inflected folk.

Gogol Bordello

They fuse a lot of Eastern European/Gypsy sounds with Punk and Dub to create an excellent musical style. The only other band I've heard come close is Kultur Shock.

Give them a listen:

Wanderlust King, Tribal Connection, American Wedding, Oh No, Illumination, Undestructable, and Smarkatch

I think Over the Rhine is one of the most underrated bands around. They're getting more popular, but most people still don't know them.

Their music is hard to describe. The best description I heard was my friend saying they are "mesmerizing". They have an incredible female lead singer and their music is very relaxing and mellow. Their lyrics range from goofy to philosophical to sexy to soul searching.

I think the best album to start with would be "Good Dog Bad Dog".

I used to really love Jump, Little Children. I saw them a few times when I was a teenager... Jonathan let my mom borrow his jacket. <3

So, I guess they'd be one of the bands. Others...

The Church. A lot of people know and like them, but not enough... they should be huge. Steve Kilbey is one of the best lyricists ever. Very subtle, but passionate. Languid and shrugs of shoulders that suggest some of the most intense and passionate feelings than can be expressed (and often, those that can't be expressed). He doesn't ever whine, but writes slightly cryptic lines that haunt you. And his voice is gorgeous. And the band is top notch... brilliantly musicians, unique and talented. They play off each other perfectly... subtle, but perfectly orchestrated.

Chainsaw Kittens. One of the best alt-rock bands, but maybe with a bit too much of a Glam leaning to be widely accepted. Tyson Meade's voice is beautiful, and camp but confessional lyrics. Kinda like half Smashing Pumpkins/half New York Dolls. They should have been huge... but the make-up and glitter, and Tyson being openly gay didn't go over too well with the alt-rock crowd (at least not the mainstream teenage boy one... they were darlings of the underground, though).

Plexi. Kinda like Jane's Addiction crossed with The Cure, but with way more drugs than either could ever fathom. Catchy and poppy, but loud and bit aggro. Black lipstick and songs about suicide. So cliche, but it really worked for them. And you can't top lines like "Just like Phillis Diller, I'm a forest ranger!" and "When I was looking at you, I didn't mind your foggy weather/ I just wonder what it's like to die" and "We can rush until we peak/Shine a silver dollar cheek/Sniffing glue and gasoline". Alt-rock, a bit of thrash, a bit of Glam, a lot of Goth, and bit of early Emo thrown in.

Jobriath. The queen of Glam rock... The first openly/publicly gay artist on a major label. Music that was as much Glam Rock as it was 1930s film scores from Busby Berkeley movies. "Clara Bows and open toes are what I am" and "when will you give me your street corner love" and "keeping time with your heartbeat, everydaaayy... tick tock". Gorgeous! A voice like Jagger's, if Jagger could actually sing and worked in a drag club. A beautiful boy and a brilliant songwriter. It was all fantasy... heartbreaking, but in the way an over-stylized 1930s film is heartbreaking. Lovely! But he was a bit late in the game (mid 70s), and American (Glam wasn't big in America), so it didn't work out... end up becoming a lounge singer and dying of AIDS in the early 80s. =(

The Chakras. They're new, they're around... check them out: http://www.myspace.com/thechakras "Build Me A Swan" is a classic (or it should be, anyway).

Thrice used to be commercial, ever since they really matured and taken their music to a whole new level their popularity really went down. I believe they are still the best band out there, because they don't put out the same stuff for every CD, and it still sounds good. their lyrics are inspirational and poetic. and their courage really pushes their talent to new limits. The new compilation, The Alchemy Index, comes in four volumes...and all four have distinctly different sounds showing what they can actually do. very good. rather than the post hardcore, punk rock sound they used to have, which isn't bad. its just nice to see a band do everything they want to do rather than what the producers want them to do. They can still pull off heavy, and they are still deep.
