YES! You will notice an improvement, and it'll be a pretty decent improvement. Your computer will seem faster, and it will be able to do more at once. Don't listen to the person who said it doesn't do anything, because it will.

hi mark
if i am not mistaken the athlon xp motherboard use ddr ram memory, and if thats the case then you would be far better off buying a 1gb memory module and increasing your total memory to 1536mb(1.5gb) of ram
as another answer mentioned by just increasing from 512mb up to 1gb you will hardly notice the improvment, and at least by adding another gigabyte you will see some performance improvment
and as memory is relatively inexpensive at the moment it wont cost you too much,go to http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6108&Ca and check out the low cost memory
what i will say though is if you can afford 2gb of ram then buy it,you can never have enough memory, however remember 32bit windows operating systems have a limit of 4gb of ram(64bit system are unlimited)
also another good aspect of increasing your ram over one gigabyte is that your p.c is able to run "vista" if you decide to upgrade your os at a later date
any problems let me know
good luck mark !

seriously you will notice a difference, if you are like most people and if you have cr4p as i like to call it, all rubbish that has built up on your pc but you can;t be bother/ do not want to delete anything, then you will notice a great difference, in loading times and everything. But say out of 80gb you have used only 20 then you really do not need it. See if someone you know has got a same type of ram as you so you can try it out and see how you feel, to be honest if you by from ebay it should cost less than £20 and it is worth it and you will notice a considerable difference for not much money, go for it!

yes it will help you. You will notice a difference right away with Win XP from 512MB to 1GB or if your mobo supports more. Its always good to have a decent amout of RAM installed on your computer. Don't ever think its a bad thing.

Upgrading an old computer seldom produces much in the way of results. However, even if you do not play games or such, the more the RAM, the less likely the computer to crash. The internet uses a lot of RAM; doing virus scans, etc., also use a lot. Me, I crashed my old computer so many times just trying to print out a big report (20 pages or so). My current one pauses when I print and scan at the same time, but it DOES keep going. So, the more RAM, the less "slow time". I would definitely recommend the 2GB.
By the way, 1.4 GHz is rather slow...

YES I have had my Acer PC upgraded by a local computer dealer not multiple stores. I paid £37 plus vat and I must admit the speed is faster and downloads are a lot quicker its the best £37 I have spent on a PC . I recommend you have it done it only takes about an hour

You won't notice any difference. I had a similiar setup a few years back and it made no noticeable difference in anything when I went from 512mb to 1gb.
It would be nice to have 1gb of ram for video rendering and such, but games and office apps won't notice a difference.
