implifying
6 = 9 + -1(4x + -11)

Reorder the terms:
6 = 9 + -1(-11 + 4x)
6 = 9 + (-11 * -1 + 4x * -1)
6 = 9 + (11 + -4x)

Combine like terms: 9 + 11 = 20
6 = 20 + -4x

Solving
6 = 20 + -4x

Solving for variable 'x'.

Move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right.

Add '4x' to each side of the equation.
6 + 4x = 20 + -4x + 4x

Combine like terms: -4x + 4x = 0
6 + 4x = 20 + 0
6 + 4x = 20

Add '-6' to each side of the equation.
6 + -6 + 4x = 20 + -6

Combine like terms: 6 + -6 = 0
0 + 4x = 20 + -6
4x = 20 + -6

Combine like terms: 20 + -6 = 14
4x = 14

Divide each side by '4'.
x = 3.5

Simplifying
x = 3.5

6 = 9 - (4x - 11)

6 = 9 - 4x + 11

6 = - 4x + 20

4x = 14

x = 7/2

that's it!

2007-11-21 07:47:10 · answer #3 · answered by Marley K 7 · 0 0

6 = 9 - (4x -11)
6 = 9 - (4x) - (-11)
6 = 9 - 4x + 11
6 = 20 -4x
20 - 6 = 4x
4x = 14
2x = 7

x = 7/2

6=9 - (4x^2 -11x) <-- multiply the bracket by x
6=9- 4x^2 + 11x <-- multiply bracket by -1
4x^2 - 11x - 3 = 0 <-- bring everything to one side

now, look at factors - for 4, it's (1x4 and 2x2) and for 3 its (3x1) so, what i can guess is -3x4+1x1 = -11

so we have:

(4x+1)(x-3)=0 <-- factor the left side

expand to make sure (you can skip this step if you're confident enough):

4x^2 -12x + x -3 = 0 becomes 4x^2 - 11x -3 = 0 so the factoring was correct!!

(4x+1)(x-3)=0 is the factor that will get us our answers - we need to get the left side equal to zero for the answers - to do this, x has to make either 4x+1 zero or make x-3 zero.

to make 4x+1 = 0, make x = -1/4

(in case you're wondering, 4x+1=0 --> 4x=-1 --> x=-1/4)

to make x-3=0, make x = 3

Our answers are :

x = -1/4 and x = 3

6=9-(4x-11) x=???
6-9=-4x^2 -11x
4x^2+11x-3=0

use -> x=-b+- sqrt(b^2-4*a*c) and then you get two results
