First of all, it's not all black people who do that ignorant stuff, so please don't get it twisted! There is a segment of our population that decided that they would prefer to come away from the African tradition of giving children names that have meaning and that they would, instead, give them names that they felt "sounded pretty". It has become a nationwide joke, and is a bone of contention within the black community. There are already studies that show that people with these "unique" names, have trouble getting employment. The study our pastor quoted, took 100 or so young black people who had degrees and similar backgrounds as well as "unique" names and sent out two sets of resumes to fortune 500 companies. One set had their real names, the other had more common names. The first set got almost no responses, while the second set had at least a 50% response rate. The only difference was the names! I don't know what started it, but we need to wake up, as a people and stop it, now! People need to realize that these impossible to spell and pronounce names are economically crippling our children and, by extension, our race. People jumped on Bill Cosby for saying it out loud, but he didn't say anything that I haven't heard from other black people.

I like Kelly4u2 answer. The guy that plays Earl on the show My Name is Earl son's name is Pilot Inspektor. now that's crazy for your a** . African -Americans who give their kids unique names probably didn't want to give their kids slave names which is European names. What African you know has the name Sally,Karmen(which is my name),John,Robert, Beth ,Sara and etc.

Well I was going to ask you the same thing about white people lol John boy, Jimbob, Sara lee lol...Bubba,,,Peggysue..now alot of hollywood stars black and white are getting creative and picking up some names with style and pizazz instead of JimBob...and black people love to dress well and have a sense of style in names as well. Instead of Harry and Johnboy its Quinton or Dion which I very much prefer dont you.....It makes one feel pride to have a unique name dont you agree?

Means and Evens immigrants came from England, Ireland, Scotland and Germany. What about the other two grandparents? Your great grandparents and great great grandparents? They are as much of your history as Evens and Means are.

I would guess that most of the names are derived from African culture and roots. The same for the Irish here in America with names like Shawn, Liam, Padraig, Colin and lets not forget the Pedro's, Anita's, Guillermo's and Jose's, Its all a cultural thing

Some names come from Africa. Other names are made up I suppose. Some are Arabic too.
