Colonial America was under the rule of England. We were colonies of England. We were part of her empire, under her political, economic, and military control.
The only other meaning of colonial could be the architectural style, which is derived from that period of history's construction.

It means that they take away the sovereignty of the people that live in the country. Treat them like crap. The colonizers in many places. They would move in and let the natives become the servant in their own country.
In addition, it also means that you are colonized. The mind of the colonized people are told how inferior their culture is, when it is compared to the colonizers culture. Basically the colonizing people had to reconcile the colonizationof peope with the idea of social darwinism. White were not colonized because they were inheirantly better than the person they were exploiting.
