I am a minor. Therefore, I cannot open a checking account, at least with the three banks i have asked at.
My mother has bad credit, and has had a bankruptcy.
Therefore, a bank will not let me get a checking account that has her name on it, because of her credit.

Is there any way to get around this?
I need a credit/debit card to pay for college applications, and other costs...

I don't need a savings acocunt, because they put too many limits on them...

Any help is greatly apprecitated.

You will need an adult co-signor. Try relatives.

You could probably get a pre-paid mastercard at a local convenience store. They are a pretty bad deal since you have to pay an initial fee to get the card (about $10) and there is a fee every time you add money ($5 I think) but that might be your only option unless you can find an adult to co-sign a checking account with you.

Get a prepaid card. Also, some colleges will waive application fees if you go to the open houses and ask. I'm currently applying, and two of the three told me how to waive the fee.

Hi, It depends. If it is a custodian account, and your daughter is a minor, they shouldn't touch that account. If it is set up as a joint account, and both of you can transact on this account, then they can levy the account. It all depends on the account title and how it's set up. I suggest checking with a manager or assistant manager at your bank. They can either tell you or call their levy/garnishment department to verify. You have so many days to have the decision reversed. The bank holds the funds for several days before sending the check out (e.g. 10 days or 2 weeks). If IRS faxes a levy release within that time frame, the bank will put the funds back into your account. Once the check is send to IRS, you either won't get the money or it will take a long time (weeks or months). If the levy is justified, account is set up in such a way that a levy can be processed against it, you may be able to work something out with IRS. You can call them and let them know you were having financial difficulties, be nice to the person on the phone, and see if you can make a payment arrangement to make monthly payments. By making an arrangement, they may ask the bank to release the funds back to your account. Good luck.

If you just need a debit card, try the Rushcard. It's reloadable and designed for people that have bad credit or no credit.

Is there another adult that could be on your account? A grandparent, uncle, someone like that?
