Prevent depressions..........hahahahahahahahaha! You're kidding right? You think you can do that and have freedom? You think you can do it efficiently at all? You want to know the best way to limit depressions.......have a shitty economy. If you can't go any farther down, there will be no depressions. Another thing, were do you get this idea that your government will be more efficient that any of the other ones? Do you have the power to control people? Would you trust a stranger that much? Who are these elites? You keep talking about them but I have no idea who you are talking about unless they are connected with government. You can't protect people all the time. Things happen in life and black markets always appear. Who is going to police the police who are policing the elites? Why do we have elites in the first place? Is my rich uncle one of the elites? A normal guy who has helped my family because the government didn't have the power to control him. What is your dream world? It's like a chicken with it's head cut-off. Things are so bad they have to get fixed now but you have no idea where you are heading us. I do on the other hand. I understand that only competitive pressures and economic freedom will enable humanity the chance to obtain the highest level of success ever. Do you think that global warming will be stopped by government? Are you truly 100% sure that it isn't earth cycles and that humans have caused it! Your theories are horrible. You say you want personal freedom but that must mean you don't care about people on drugs. If you let them do drugs you are killing them in a way, right? How can you not want to help people on drugs live better lives. That is of course a joke but when you take a step back and listen to what you are saying it is nuts. I don't want elites either. That's why I want a FREE market where at least the rich have to spread the wealth through market forces. Did you know Upton Sinclair only stepped into a meat packing factory twice when he wrote his big government book that caused an oligopoly! You are the root of poverty because you don't truly respect personal or economical freedoms. In all reality there is no difference between the two.

1) National defense. To protect the nation from enemies outside, and inside, it's borders.
2) Create law and order.
3) To enforce the law too maintain order.
4) To protect the rights of its citizens.
5) To give me whatever I want, whenever I want, in any amount I want because it is my right and the American way!

Okay the last one was in jest what I'm really entitled to is a foot massage.

As concerning the policing of the elite, most people in government are the elite. Of course the definition of such a term is open to debate. As far as income, net worth, and real political power our federal government officials are the elite. And they do a poor job of policing themselves.

The last thing we need is the government to interfer more with the ecomony. Perhaps you should take a course in economics?

The ONLY legitimate function of government is to protect people from having their rights infringed by others.

Government don't prevent depressions. They create them.

It is and always has been about protection - from outside invaders (the lord had a castle with knights that the peasants ran to when they were in danger, in exchange for not having to defend themselves, they provided the lord with taxes to pay for the castle and the knights). It has been perverted lately to provide for people who are unable (or unwilling) to provide for themselves, but historically it was mainly about protection and individuals were left to provide for themselves.
