The American Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition defines physics as "the science of matter and energy and of interactions between the two, grouped in traditional fields such as acoustics, optics, mechanics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism, as well as in modern extensions including atomic and nuclear physics, cryogenics, solid-state physics, particle physics, and plasma physics." It goes on to provide this so-called archaic definition also: "The study of the natural and material world." This, in my opinion, is the most succinct and accurate definition. (See source below.)

Essentially, the study of physics encompasses everything from the smallest to the largest physical objects in the universe, as well as some things which aren't quite physical, but can be observed to have some physical attributes, such as electromagnetic radiation. It attempts to formulate laws and extract mathematical relationships which help to explain observable physical phenomena.
