Uncle Sam above me is correct.

The President does not raise taxes, Congress does.

But to be honest, anyone with a half a brain knows we have to raise taxes soon anyways to pay for the war. We can't keep spending what we don't have forever. Some day the bill collectors are going to come calling.

Whats wrong with the economy? We have a big war debt but it's percentage of US GDP is much less than it was in WWII. It will take a while to pay off but nothing like the WWII war debt where we had gas and food rationing.

By the way raising taxes does not always raise government income due to the bad effects raising taxes has on the economy. Taxes are levied on personal income and corporate profits. If raising taxes negatively effect income or profit, less money is taxed, and the amount of money the government gets is less. See the link below.

Not to shake your confidence, but none of that is the job of the President. The duties of that office are laid out in Article Two of the Constitution. The closest he would ever come to what you suggest is where he is required to give to the Congress information on the State of the Union and recommend necessary and expedient measures for their consideration.
Beginning in the Spring of 1933, with Franklin Delano Roosevelt, we have been conditioned to view the President as some sort of Federal Wizard King. We need to disabuse ourselves of that notion and put the task of correcting all that you have laid out exactly where it belongs: in the Congress!

This "raise taxes" charge has been leveled at every Democrat who ever ran for office. Consider that John Kerry voted to raise taxes once in his entire senate career. Bill Clinton raised taxes only once while he was in office. Many democratic presidents have never raised taxes.
