I've checked out some recipes on the web and they were all alike. I've followed the recipe and added lots of soy milk (since I’m vegan) but it was still too solid and chunky- I couldn’t achieve a creamy texture. And it just didn’t taste right, the garlic was dominant but that’s about it.

I haven't got a better recipe but I was just wondering if you realise that peanutsauce ALWAYS goes almost solid (and dark) when it cools down. I always leave it to sit a day, then I just add some water and warm it up again, stir well and it's perfect...

What kind of peanutbutter are you using? Does it have any additives? Maybe you could try it without the soymilk and just use water instead, could be the soymilk that's reacting with the peanuts somehow...

Like Willeke, I never use garlic either, but sambal and ketjap... If the garlic is dominant, use less...

Our family recipe is rather simple, we use creamy peanut butter, start with twice as much peanut butter as milk and heat it while stirring well, add more milk when it starts to get lumpy.
When warm we might add a little hot sauce, often the Indonesian Sambal Oelek, but chili sauce or tabasco will work too. We do not use garlic in the sateh, although we use it in the other dishes when eating an Indonesian dinner. We do add a little ketjap, which is salty soy sauce.

Try it out with a little, a couple of spoonfuls of peanut butter will do, and if it does not work, try cow milk rather than soy milk, (have someone try the recipe for you if you do not use cow milk at all,) as it is a bit of a chemical reaction.

Added:
I talked with my mother, she told me to use much liquid she starts out with one on one but ends with twice as much liquid, when the peanut butter gets dark and lumpy you have to add more liquid.

I like the leftover sateh sauce just as it is, lumpy and cold. Also good on bread, cold or hot.

use water not soymilk.Takes the taste out of the peanutbutter.
