It's not hard to get into a British college (top schools are as competitive as top schools here, however). What is difficult is that you can't get any financial aid for out-of-country schools, so it's on your own dime.

Not hard at all, so long as you meet the admissions requirements for a UK university. (They don't call them colleges there. In the UK, a college is something else.)
Check out the websites for a couple of good quality UK universities: I'd have you look at University College, London, and St. Andrews as examples. See what they require of US applicants.
In general, they'll want you to meet the same standards of UK applicants. And, because UK students actually have one extra year of school by the time they're applying to university, they want you to meet that by having either an IB diploma instead of a normal US highschool diploma, or else having a normal high school diploma plus either:
- 3 or 4 AP exams, scored 4 or higher, or
- SAT scores above a certain point, plus one year of US university before you apply.
Again, check the websites for those two example universities so you can see what sorts of things most UK universities require. You can also check, say, U Manchester or U Birmingham, see if what they need is any different.
Hope this helps.

I had a dream to do that too. Until I realized that if I wanted to come back to the U.S, my degree from the UK may or not be worth anything.
