This is about the same Toshiba I got four years ago, and it was retired to be my Linux work station. The model was very good four years ago, but not mow. Toshiba has good computers, but this one at this time, it is too old and too small to do anything.

To be truthful, this is a piece of crap. You get what you pay for. 512 mb of ram is hardly anything, now days it's 1-2 gb of ram, especially for Vista.

You might as well be buying a little hotwheels toy laptop.

From http://www.notebooks.com/2007/11/19/best-buy-black-friday-toshiba-a135-s7403-for-229/:

Q: I’m going to college next fall and am thinking of getting the Best Buy Toshiba A135-S7403 for $229.98 on Black Friday. Will it last for 4 years?

A: I like to compare computers to cars because some people have a lot more experience with them than computers. Buying a Toshiba A135-S7403 is a lot like buying an old beat-up car that makes a a lot of bad sounds. It’ll get you from place to place, but it’ll give you lots of headaches and end up costing more than you expected in the long term. If you get the Toshiba A135-S7403 you’re going to need to upgrade much sooner than if you invest in a better one now. I’d suggest waiting until next summer if you can wait.

Toshiba makes a decent laptop, but Vista Home is garbage (you should run Ultimate or Premium instead) and 512MB or memory is not enough for Vista. On a laptop, anything less then 3 GB of memory will not be enough for Vista (you may be able to get by with 2GB). The CPU (processor) is underpowered also as it is a Celeron, and not the Intel Core 2 Duo. This will be a bigger bottleneck then the lack of memory will be. I own an IBM Thinkpad X61s with a Core 2 Duo, 4 GB of memory, 120GB hard drive and Vista Ultimate. The battery also lasts 8 hours between charging. You will not get that from Toshiba or anyone else (but then I paid considerably more for my laptop then you are looking to pay - $2300).

its pretty good mate. will play crysis on med settings and that's the most demanding game out there. you could maybe save a bit if you built it yourself but at this level it would only be a few pounds so i wouldn't worry. the card is pretty decent, and the cpu is excellent for gaming. what i would do is buy an aftermarket cpu cooler, see if they will install it for you, if not its cheap for a shop to do. they only cost £20 or so. then you can overclock the cpu to 4ghz which is common practise for these cpu's. then you'll have a pretty top spec machine. as you say you can go to £500, i'd try and get a 9800GT card, couple that with a 4ghz cpu and you'll have a machine that'll play anything you throw at it for at least a couple of years. the ram is fine too, banging in another 2gb will only cost £30 but it not something that needs doing right away. any questions let me know.

This computer is extremely weak, and is in fact crippled with that amount of RAM. That said, the printer is $80, so it's a $140 laptop. For that amount, you could probably have them install another stick of 512 RAM in the store and still get a reasonable sum.

I don't see battery specifications, and it would depend on usage anyway, but I think 90 minutes is a likely minimum.

1.73GHz Intel Celeron M 530 processor- Kind of poor, this would be like almost a year old technology
512MB of DDR2 RAM - again kind of behind the time. For Vista its really bad.
80GB This is about normal. maybe a little under
The rest is about the same.
if you buy it and put XP on it. (Pay like 80 for a copy of XP Pro at Best buy). It probably well be better!
The only thing good about the deal is the Printer. And that seems to be worth at least a $100.
But considering there is only 20 per store, I don't think it would be worth it. You well buy it and regret it for day one. (unless you plan on putting XP on it, it would be better).

This thing is complete crap. 512mb MIGHT let you have like 2 internet windows open at the same time.

the processor is crap. You need at LEAST an Intel dual-core 1.6ghz processor, which means it has 2 1.6ghz processors in it. The one you want has 1 1.73ghz processor in it. This thing isn't even worth $300! Save your money for a better one.

my dad fixes computers for a livingg he said to look for the highest GB[gigabyte] for memory, take care of it, and for a good battery.. you could always ask someone that works there too!
Good Luck!
