Yes it does. Plaster will bond to the colored side (blue, green, grey)of the wall board. The white side will have to be treated with a bonding agent before plaster is applied. ( sold at Depot) If not it will break away and large pieces of the plaster will fall off. You can apply gypsum to the white, but keep it thin. Some people think plaster is the same as gypsum. Not so. two different animals. The brown side is to be applied against the wall and not even bothered with

if you read the manufacturers information you will find out that you plaster the white side, for normal board. it also tells you that on the back of every board! the very old way mentioned in some previous answers went out many years ago.
the back face is the one which has the paper wrapped around the edge about 10 mm that goes back to the wall. the front is plastered or taped and jointed or directly decorated.
You can use gypsum finishing plaster, orange bag or board finish, green bag. normal thickness about 2mm, maybe upto about 6mm on boards.
modern plaster is all based on gypsum of two basic types, old plaster or that used in restoration/eco-build is lime.
please know what you are talking about if you answer a question.

Regulations now in England say that because a multi finish plaster is used then the white side is to be plastered on. It use to be the grey when board finish plaster was used. You can however unibond the grey side then plaster it.

Yes. One side is foor painting and other side is for plastering. That is why you have a grey side and a white side. You plaster on the white side.

Either side is fine. Its a bit of an old wives tale to say that the dark side is for skimming. It's just cheaper to make it the way they do as the brown paper will be cheaper than the white paper.
It's manufactured that way so builders merchants only need to stock one item in bulk, not two, as they can sell the same board to those who want to skim and those who don't.

You can plaster on either side these days! If it's a feathered edged board then the feather is 'OUT' for scrim tape.
