The reason I ask is because I see so many pro lifers say that ALL/ANY woman that gets an abortion is wrong, selfish, evil, insert your favorite adjective here. What about the women that abort because their health or life is at risk if they continue the pregnancy(need treatment for a disease, cancer, or have been severely injured and waiting for birth would make it impossible to fix the injuries, their body is fighting the fetus as if it were a foreign invader), or how about for substance abuse that adversely affects the fetus, or when their are problems with the fetus(genetic disorders, not developing properly), or the woman had to get what is considered an abortion because the fetus died but didn't get expelled from the body? What about rape, why should a woman be forced to carry the progeny of a rapist? What about incest, inbreeding causes problems in the population, shouldn't that be a valid reason?

"Don't push it, leave it alone. You don't know what you are talking about." by space cadet.

Don't push what? Leave what alone? A subject that can have a direct impact on my life(I am a woman, abortion is a woman's issue)? This concerns me because, Powers forbid, I could end up in a situation that I have outlined in my question, and if pro lifers have their way I may not be able to make the decision to try and preserve my mental/physical well being or life. Why should I "leave it alone" when it is something that can impact my life, and I'm trying to understand my oppositions view on the subject. I may not know all involved with the subject of abortion, but I know enough to ask my questions and form my beliefs on it.

El puma, exactly, I feel as you do on this, education is the key, not just about sex, BC, where babies come from, and the consequences of sex, but also teaching young women to be responsible for their actions and accepting the consequences of their actions, and giving them the tools and info they will need when they deal with said consequences. In a perfect world, babies will be born healthy, mothers will never have to choose between their own health/life and that of their unborn child, and people will not have convenience abortions.

"ill ask u this ok a woman life is in danger if she delivers the baby what if the doc or what ever u call him that performs the abortion does something and not only does the child dies but so does the mother then what ?"

Well, the final result would be the same as if she hadn't sought an abortion, but why should that option be taken away if she is willing to take the course that MAY result in her death as opposed to taking the course that will end in her death? Why shouldn't she be able to do what she can to preserve her life?

People, I'm not asking about convenience abortions.

Shadow Dweller, finally, a view from an all or nothing. If you feel ok with that, fine, but is it really necessary to make women that have made the decision you wouldn't make feel like more sh*t because of it? There's nothing selfish about preserving your own life, especially if you are preserving that life for the family that is already in this world and not in-transit.

I'm against abortions. Yet, I understand that there are circumstances, such as medical reasons that will harm both baby and mom. I'm also in favor of abortions for those who have been raped and the trauma is just too much for them to live with; some women can't; while others can; no judgment should be held towards those who can't. As for those who weren't wise enough to use protection when they should have, well that's a different story.

The one situation i see as a valid reason for abortion (and i'd say in this case it's a neccesary medical procedure rather than a 'choice' - most often the baby is wanted) is if the mother's life is in danger, for example in cases of an ectopic pregnancy, where both the mother and the baby will die if the pregnancy continues.

As for rape, i don't believe that another act of violence should be used as a solution to the first; a baby is no less a life for the way in which it was conceived, and also it is half the mother's. If she couldn't cope with a baby at that time in her life, for whatever reason, there are many childless couples willing to adopt.

Often in cases of incest, the abuser takes the girl for an abortion to cover his actions, leaving him free to continue the abuse afterwards. We should be working on preventing incest occuring, by having better child protection laws and punishments for offenders. Pregnancy is not the problem here; the problem is the abuse itself, which needs to be stopped.

When the foetus dies naturally inside the body, it's classed as miscarriage. The baby is already dead; it then has to be removed. This process is not abortion.

I know there are extreme circumstances in which abortion is the only option. These circumstances however don't justify abortion on demand. If it was illegal for social reasons, no one is going to be inhumane enough to deny a woman with a life-threatening illness treatment which could save her.

yeah. But I'm not exactly a pro-lifer. I never have and I seriously doubt I would I ever encourage a woman to get one, whether I was the one that impregnated her or not (barring the most EXTREME circumstances, like an ultrasound revealing that the fetus had not developed a functioning brain stem and was doomed to be nothing more than a vegetable for the whole of his/her life).

But I don't believe they should be illegal, because I think the world is better off without the children or the sort of people that would kill their own offspring. Crowded enough on this planet as it is, and killing for convenience is by no means restricted to this particular arena.

I expect this to get me a lot of pops in the right hand box. Hope so, anyway.

I am both pro-life and pro-choice, both of which are merely labels that limit and polarize people into factions. Neither "label" addresses the infinite variety of individual situations that exist. Where is the argument? Each woman and man must face the issue privately, without religious or legal interference. It is not a public debate; the private debate is difficult enough. We are all so different, bringing unique sensibilities to this matter. Somehow extreme judgment (pro and con) has crept into this serious and very private matter. Live and let live without judgment. For both those who would "save" the unborn and those who defend only the born, please practice compassion. That "other" is yourself. I am Sirius

It's funny that you asked this question because I was walking by a Planned Parenthood this weekend and all the pro-lifers were out there as usual harrassing young women going into the facility and I noticed a number of them just keep walking because they didn't want to have to deal with them. I have to wonder how many were on their way to pick up the MAP or how many were just trying to get a prescription for BC so that they wouldn't find themselves in a situation where they have to make such a choice. They rarely think about that though. Just shoving their opinions down other peoples throats.

You preach about the mothers taking responsibility and you say that they should have thought about the inconvenience before they did what they did but what about the children? They didn't have anything to do with the choices that their parents made but they're forced to pay for them. Sure, they're alive but doesn't anyone care about the quality of their lives? You speak of God's plan for life but let's be honest. Every time we bring someone back from the brink of death, when we put babies in those cute little incubaters and keep them alive when they wouldn't have otherwise survived, we're messing with God's plan. It could be argued that pretty much everything about modern medicine is against God's plan. For lack of a better word, "defective" babies would, most likely, not survive anyway were it not for medicines interference so that's not really a valid comment in my opinion. And men telling people that they don't know what they're talking about in terms of this subject is just like...unbelievable. I don't know how you could know what you're talking about either.

Well, I do consider myself pro-life to a point. I do believe that women should get an abortion for valid reasons only, like rape, incest, if your life is in danger. I don't believe a woman should get one because they "accidently" got pregnant or uses abortion as birth control. I do think that if you are going to have sex you should know there is always a possibility of getting pregnant and if you don't want to, then wait to have sex. But I think there are some cases where I see why women get an abortion.

health reasons? such as? so ur saying if i was pregnant and got sick...its better to have an abortion to save my own @$$ then to try and save my childs instead? hmm sounds rather..oh whats the word? selfish to me.
and please do not preach to be about my family missing me..im aware they would...but it would be my decision and they would respect it and they would love the child i left behind. and would make sure she or he had a mommy loving enough to risk her own life. If i had children i would die for them...even before they were born just so they could live.

and rape? what the heck for? its not the childs fault it was concieved that way...so many women...focus so much on the hatred towards the rapist that they think and let that hatred go towards the very one that did nothing. to the innocent one.
and why is that? Its always the same reason " i dont want to carry the child of a monster!" I dont want anything from such a moster!" Im carrying a monster!"
if ur so worried about a monster go find the one who did it to you and kill him yourself! I would. And dont think for an instant i would not.

and incest? just because blood is so closely mixed does not always mean the child will come out severly handicapped. what about children who are handicapped from parents who are not related? should they have been aborted to avoid problems in the population? just to make things easier for those of who are not handicapped?
i hate incest...i hate rape...and i do not condone either. But to me..neither constitutes abortion.

There are valid reasons for abortion. For example, if there is a realistic threat to the life of the mother to be, if the fetus is carried to term, I think abortion as a "self defense" measure should be allowed. All legal systems of the world also allow termination of human life on various ethical reasons as well (such as death penalty, euthenasia etc.) Hence abortions may also be allowed in case of realistic rape victims for ethical reasons.

Keeping abortion as an unquestionable right or choice of a person oh her body is ridiculous, becasue abortion affects ***the body*** of the fetus (another human being) as well. One shouldnt have a right on his or her body when that right causes terminal harm on someone else's body.

I am neither pro-life nor pro-choice. I think that there are different ethical decisions in different circumstances. If you can afford to keep the baby, financially, and if you are yourself healthy (not a drug-addict or permanently disabled in some other way), then you should allow the baby to live.

Abortion is the result of despair ... all of the answers you've posted are desparate.

When I was a smoker, I got so many reasons for me to quit. Some of the reason's were loving ... other's were selfish and they provoked me at my despair at being enslaved to ciggarretts. As a smoker, I would "Justify" my smoking at any cost. It was the pain that I held onto because I didn't know any better. I finally kicked the habit, and now realize that when ppl seek justification for something that is fundamentally wrong, they do so because they're in despair and want other misserable ppl to bond with.

What about rape? Well, did you see the movie, "North Country" staring Charleese Theron? Unless life is givnen a chance, under all circumstances ... despairation is leading us all to death.
