Depends on what it's made from. Natural fibers such as wool would be the best, but you'd really tear up the fibers. Even synthetics would tend to break apart. You'd get the best result from new, off the roll carpet, not one that's been underfoot for awhile. Just too much residual dirt, stains, shampoo left to do a perfect job.
