1. Margot
Origin: French Gender: Girls
Meaning: Pearl.

2. Margot
Origin: Greek
Gender: Girls
Meaning: Variant of Margaret: Pearl.

3. Margot
Origin: Persian
Gender: Girls
Meaning: Variant of Margaret: Child of light. Famous Bearer: Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

In each case it's pronounced 'Mar-go' in the French style. In the same way the French word for 'sailor' is matelot' and that is pronounced 'mat-e-lo'. In French, and this name is of French origin, words ending in 'et' end pronounced 'ay' and those ending 'ot' are pronounced 'oh'

The T is silent.

I was assistant director of the play. The script says to pronounce the T, but I had my doubts. I wanted to be historically correct. I emailed Miep Gies. This was shortly before she died. She replied, "The T is indeed silent and good luck with your production." She actually knew Margot Frank. If I believe anyone about this, it's her.

Since it has been seven years I hope the girl now realizes her teacher was correct. Margot Frank was German her name is not pronounced in the French fashion with the silent T but in the German fashion with the T stress. This name is also pronounced this way in several other European countries.
