I plan on being a doctor when I grow up, so I want to major in pre-med, but I love learning a lot of different languages. Don't get me wrong; I love science and medicine too. I just love them both. Also, I learn languages extremely easily.

Also, should I maybe major in one and minor in the other, or do a student-designed major?

I am also planning on studying abroad as much as possible.

The other poster who said that pre-med is not a major is right; you can major in anything you like. (I majored in Dramatic Literature and Theatre Arts, but that's a little extreme. *g*)

The poster who said not to take French or Spanish is dead wrong. Languages are an absolutely fabulous thing to have as a doctor, and Spanish would be far from the worst thing you can take--I wish I had! Being able to talk to more patients in their native tongue will be incredibly helpful, and Spanish is very, very useful. Studying abroad is great too.

Med schools love students who have a wide range of experiences, and they will love your enthusiasm. Pick your major based on what you like. As long as you complete the pre-med prerequisites, it doesn't matter what you major in. They will be far more concerned that you did what you loved than that you had one more chemistry course than someone else (believe me, you will get all the science you can handle in the first two years of med school).

Best of luck, and enjoy your undergrad years while you're at it!

In the U.S., you do a 4 year bachelor's degree before starting med school. It used to be possible to major in anything, but I have heard that the med school requirements have been changed so that it is almost required to be a biology or chemistry major to get into med school. You can certainly minor in a foreign language, as long as you have all the science courses that are expected. While you are doing the 4 year degree, you can study abroad. Every university has agreements with schools in other countries that let students study there while paying fees to the home university. You need to look at the entrance requirements for Duke medical school if that's where you want to go.

Pre-medicine is not a major.

You major in something else, and choose pre-med only as a "track", which means that you plan on completing the pre-requisites for medical school. If you mean, double major in a science (biology/chemistry/physics/etc) and a language, I would say, go for it, if that is what you want to do.

Seems to me you have an excellent plan. Pre-med major and a minor in a language, preferably a difficult and less-studied one (i.e. not Spanish or French).

Good luck.

BA has nothing to do with your PHD...etc.

You can double major in bio (or whatever science) and a language (or whatever liberal arts major you'd like) that will complement that.....when you apply to med school you will be more attractive bc not many ppl combine those two majors.

Med schools look for diversity - so your best bet is to be as diverse as possible when you get your BA
