First of all, I know that there are Christian Democrats, and Republican Atheists/Jewish/Muslim/whatever. But, you guys know what I'm talking about. Why, for instance, does Pat Robertson support Guiliani over, say, John Edwards or Bill Richardson?

The GOP generally is for the outlawing of abortion. Also, they work to instill Christian values into our society.

That's two different questions: Why Christians favor the GOP, and why Robertson supports Giuliani. I'll answer both:

1) They favor the GOP because the GOP favors THEM. The GOP rejects the obligation of government neutrality created by the Non-Establishment Clause and has a rooting interest in Christianity, and tries to use government to promote it.

2) Robertson wants to win, and he thinks Giuliani (who does not agree with several of Robertson's key values) is the best bet to stop Hillary, whom Robertson and other right-wing Christians have manufactured into a Demon.

Well Pat Robertson is a republican. His main interest is in money, not Christianity (see tv evangelist). And just because a person decides to fly a christian banner over his house doesnt mean he is anymore christian than anyone else. Its just that republicans have decided to go after that voting demographic by claiming that they themselves share the same values. None of it is to be believed by a thinking person.

It is an individual choice but for most religious christians, the GOP offers far more ethical candidates and the important thing for them is that if the candidate turns out to be a dog, the GOP turns on them and pushes them out whereas the democrats would circle the wagons and attack the accuser. That difference is the most important to most people I think.

Because many Christians believe that their particular brand of Christianity(there are about 300 denominations) will be the one that prevails as a state religion. The GOP has really let itself be driven by these evangelical, born agains like Pat robertson(the same guy that was happy to bombs bursting in the Mideast-armaggedon).

The best way to protect individual religious beliefs is separation of church and state.

it is kind of a chicken and the egg sort of thing, most of the south is republican...most of the south is Christian, so in order to keep in line with his flock Robertson backs Guiliani.

Traditionally the answer would be abortion and such, but Guiliani has kind of been crowned the republican nominee so Robertson has decided to turn a blind eye to that

because he knows that if ANY democrat is elected, we can kiss this republic goodbye. even the insane pat robertson knows that this is an election for the lesser of two evils...he would NEVER in a million years vote for guliani if he had a reagan instead, but he doesn't. he is faced with the same choice as the rest of us. vote for an american, or vote for a democrat. at least guliani still loves his country and will fight to protect it and its citizens. none of the democrats would do that...

Probably because of the ideologies. Republicans believe in taking responsibility for your own actions, being accountable for what you say and do, rule of the majority, earning a living, and being punished for breaking the law. Democrats advocate rights of criminals over the rights of their victims, excusing criminal acts for virtually any reason, catering to every minority group, perpetual welfare for people who are too lazy to go out and even try to find a job, government-control of social programs like retirement and health care, and state-sanctioned murder of innocent unborn children in the name of personal convenience. Democrats see themselves as the Robin Hoods of the modern age, righting wrongs by robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. In actuality, however, they rob from everybody who works and give to themselves and the laziest among us so they'll be re-elected every 2, 4 and 6 years.

Evangelicals are social conservatives. The GOP has called itself social conservative for many years and they promote "family values". The Democrat is a no-no for many evangelicals because of the party's support for abortion and gay people.
