my truck is supposed to start when the clutch is engaged, and it has. but now it kinda chooses when it wants to, the last few days i have had to pump and pump and it took nearly 15 minutes before it finally worked. my uncle thinks it is the neutral safety switch. so if you know where this is located and how to replace it.....let me know, we have a big trip to make for thanksgiving......please

There's a switch under the dash that the clutch pedal rod hits. That's usually where it's located. It's not to hard to change.Just a couple of screws.

What year is the S-10? I have two S-10's 1984 4x4 blazer and the 86 pickup with the 2.5 liter 4 cyclinder/ 4 speed with 186,000 miles that did the same thing. I had to end up changing out the distributor. Fires up fine now. For some reason those distributors like to go out. They have a real small computer board on them, located right under the rotary button. Have you check all your connections inside the distributor where they plug into the module? I had to take one back to the parts store after six months and have it replaced again. The module and everything checked out ok. Even the module on the old distributor checked out ok. The parts guy agreed with me and thought it was that little pc board also causing the problem. As far as the neutral switch... If you look under the dash you will find a safety switch that depresses in when you push your clutch pedal in. See if yours is getting fuel to the throttle body or carb. Mine was getting the fuel and could hear the fuel pump kick in when i just switch the key to on position.

What are you pumping? If you are pumping the gas pedal when it won't start, I take it the motor cranks but won't start. You have to be specific as diagnosing cars is difficult enough when the car is in front of you. Pumping the gas pedal does very little in the way of helping a car start unless it is flooded. The clutch safety switch is only to prevent the starter from engaging unless the clutch pedal is depressed. There are some PCMs that use the input for idle purposes, but not too many of them. I suspect what you are asking is the motor cranks but won't fire. This is generally related to a fuel pressure problem. Knowing the year of the truck and the type of motor helps as well. Either you have a plugged fuel filter, a leaky CPI inside the motor, or the fuel pump is either leaking internally in the tank or it cannot get the pressure up high enough. Change the fuel filter and recheck. If it doesn't fix the problem, check to see how much pressure is available, 55 psi to start.

there should be a switch on the pedal assembly so as it won't start in gear by accident. if this switch isn't bad ( can be checked by unplugging and using a jumper wire to connect both sides ) then you have a problem with the starter or ignition switch. A neutral safety switch is used on automatics . If the switch is bad and you choose to hard wire the plug as to get rid of the switch, be very care full as the truck will lurch if the clutch is not depressed or isn't in neutral

it probably is the neutral safety switch causing that too happen, its located right up above the clutch pedal arm ,and comes off real easy, that will cause that to happen, its just getting worn out a little, you can replace it in about 30 minutes and the part only cost about 15 bucks, good luck on it.

the switch is under the dash on the rod that pushes the clutch master cylinder. it also could be a bad starter but the switch is much cheaper
