What is the fluid in a Stewart Warner mechanical water temp guage capilllary tube?

The fluid is in the capillary tube not the head of the guage. There is a copper bulb ot the end of the tube that goes in the engine cooling system. What fluid and any advise on how to install it.

Who knows what the fluid is and what difference does it make? It installs like any temp sensor, use teflon tape or sealant on the threads and screw it into the water jacket.

The old ones were filled with mercury

Some are alcohol that expands and others are wax they both do the same thing.
