"dude" has kind of supplanted the American slang word "man" in recent years.

Examples of using "man" in American slang include.......

Hey "man," what's going on ?
"Man o Man," what a good lookin' car/girl/....and so on.
"Man," I can't belive I ate that whole thing !!
Check out his song "man."

"Man," as a American slang, and to the best of my knowledge, became in popular use in the mid-late 1950's.

The term "old man" to refers to a persons husband or father. You would have to be fairly old to use this although it is recognized by almost everyone. The younger kids today would consider this term hokey and out dated.

The younger kids use: the words "dude" "bro", "brofius" some times if there is a younger kid around he might be called "little bro". .

Then there is the term "the man" which does not refer to an individual but usually a cop, larger corporation, government or any entity that represents authority. If some one gets a traffic ticket that they think is unfair they say they got victimized by "the man".

"The man" can also be used as a compliment. "You the man!" is common.

Blacks call each other "Ni*gger" or "Ni*gga". BUT whites can not call blacks this because it would be considered extremly racist and offensive! If you are white do NOT use this word! I am not sure how or why blacks call each other this and whites can't/won't use this word.

Blacks have been using "bro" or "brother" longer than whites although "bro" is common with whites these days. Blacks also use the term "co" which is short for "cousin".

Mexicans are some times called an "essay", "homes" or "home boy". Whites could probably use these words but the Mexicans would probably be puzzled but most likely not offended.

I hope this helps!

as an end to a statement.... as in 'Get a life MAN' or 'You got the time MAN'.....
It can and probaly will be construed as quite rude if you use it in the wrong company, as it is considered insolent and belittling.
