why does it hurt, when i trim my nails too deep?

i trim the dirty white parts that naturally grows on the nails, but when i trim it too deep, it hurts until the nail grows back, why is that?

well u shouldnt cut that deep...
a little of the white portion should remain on the nails...
it looks good...
as for dirt just wash them with soap and a soft brush.....
