This picture is from EGG (noted gyaru/gal magazine) of Natsumi Yoshida (popular gyaru/gal model) with make up of the manba style.

The style is called Gyaru (japanese transliteration of the english word, Gal and is meant to describe a fashionable 'hot' chick). It comes from around 1996 when High School Japanese girls started to tan their skin, lighten their hair, and wear lots of make up. It evolved into many subcategories and by 1999 'manba' (then called yamanba) became the most widespread and popular gyaru style.

The history behind this is very long and deep. This website might help clear things up, it is devoted to gaijin-gyaru (foreigners, like Americans, who practice the gyaru style) and has lots of information!

Ganguro came from some artist that dressed that way long time ago from Japan. It came back to life when the girls became obsessed with Baywatch and wanted to have tans and blonde hair. But they went a lil overboard and created the Ganguro look. There are different looks to it like Kogal and Yamamba. From what I have learned it depends on the intensity of the the tan and what the girl wears. Also the dance Parapara coincides with this subculture.

Here are some documentary/ video of this style!:

It probably started with the Bobio-kun who were boys who went to tanning salons so their complexion would look more like Bobby Brown. The Ganguro girls usually use tanning cream rather than the fake and bake. Believe it or not, Bobby Brown used to be even bigger in Japan than MC Hammer!
