Alex M,
as a Former Marine I am proud to note a U.S. Marine recipient of the Medal of Honor and to this day considered a hero of the USMC during WW I.

First is Sergeant Major Dan Daly who is noted for the following:

Best remembered for a famous battle cry delivered during the desperate fighting in Belleau Wood in June 1918. Marines took a terrific pounding on the outskirts of Lucy le Bocage ("Lucy Birdcage" to the A.E.F.) at the fringe of Belleau Wood. They were outnumbered, outgunned and pinned down. Then Daly made history. He ordered an attack. Leaping forward, he yelled to his tired men, "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?"

He received the Medal of Honor twice.

Hope this helps.

- General Pershing
- Major Whittlesey ( Commander of the Lost Battalion)

- Cher Ami, a carrier pigeon, lost a leg and part of a wing flying through the battle to get a message to headquarters, Cher Ami was credited with saving the lost battalion and at this moment is on display at the Smithsonian Institute.
- Roland and George Bradford, the only brothers to win the Victoria Cross in WW1.
- My favorite, Sargent Stubby, a pit-bull terrier,America's first Canine Hero. He served 18 months and was in 17 battles. He saved his regiment from a surprise gas attack. He located wounded soldiers, carried messages under fire, AND ONCE CAUGHT A GERMAN SPY BY THE SEAT OF HIS PANTS ! Sgt. Stubby received a Victory Medal and a Gold Medal for valor for his actions in WW1.
