Over Salinger's dead body!
He is very adament that Catcher is never made into a film. He has no faith in Hollywood to do his book justice (and given the crap that's being made, who can blame him?). I heard he was approcached many times and he would not give up the rights. Then someone suggested that HE write the screenplay and he said absolutely not. His wishes are so well-known, that you will also never find a movie that is even "loosely based" on the book.

It is one of the most important books in my life. I think I would be upset to see it remade into a film. I cannot imagine anyone being able to portray Holden in such a way that would make it keep it's meaning.
While we are on the subjects, I do think "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was brilliantly remade on screen.

My guess is that those who have the copyright on the book will not allow it.
I do think it's a very fine book, and would make a good movie, but like the song says, 'we can't always get what we want.' Wish we could, though.

I really don't know. It deserves to be made into a movie. However, none of today's actors and actresses could really portray the parts. They're all too shallow.

I agree with those who said it's related to copyright. But also, it's an important book, not because of what happens, but because of Holden's perceptions about what happens. That'd be hard to get across in a movie.

My guess is that JD Salinger hasn't sold the rights. The one time he did allow one of his stories to be adapted, it was so badly done that he hasn't allowed the filming of any other of his works.

Because Holden Caulfield is a very pessimistic and cynical character.
