Straight M all the way M1- M6- A556 AT KNUTSFORD-ONTO M56--dead easy, very boring though.I always use the old london road,up the A5,but just for the interest, sometimes the A34 as well in one section. It just depends how much time you have, which route you take. You can use the great north road ( A1) up to the m18,left to the M1 and cut across through either sheffield,or up to the M62 and left down to manchester, this is a round route but very scenic in places, the time of day will determine ease of passage.

If its Friday afternoon do not touch the north part of M1 took me 4 hours from Birmingham via M42 to Leeds 200 miles.
I would suggest M1 & M6 straight through.
Good Luck

From Durham follow the A1 southbound to Junction 43 and then join the Southbound M1 towards London. Exit the M1 an junction 6A and take the M25 clockwise heading towards Stansted Airport and the Dartford Crossing. Once on the M25 exit junction 27 and take the Southbound M11 towards London NE and continue to the end of the M11 at junction 4 where it merges with the A406 North Circular Road. Keep in the left hand lane to take the slip road to the southbound A406 heading toward the Blackwall tunnel and the A13. Keep in the left hand lane to take the slip road from the North Circular Road heading towards the A12 Blackwall Tunnel down towards the Redbridge Roundabout. At the Redbridge Roundabout take the 4th exit onto the A12 heading toward the Blackwall tunnel. After going through 2 tunnels move over to the left hand lane to take the slip road towards Leyton and then at the end of the slip road turn right at the traffic lights, right again at the next set of lights before going straight ahead through the next 2 sents of lights to join the A106 Ruckholt Road which will take you to Leyton. Once in London I'm sure your disable mum would be able to use the Dial - a ride bus service which would be able to pick you mum up at where you are staying instead of driving her to the bus stop/station

If I were you I'd take the train - Virgin Trains from Euston Station takes 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes. Will take at least double that to drive and even longer in bad winter weather, or if there are the inevitable traffic jams on the motorways due to roadworks or accidents.

Depends what time of day and what day of the week and what part of London. 3am on a Sunday morning, a doddle. 7.30am on a Monday morning forget it. From East London M11/A14, M6. From North London M1, M6. From West London M40, M6.
