this is because your windows edition is 32 bit, not 64 bit. 32 bit supports only upto 3.25, and the 64 bit supports up to 8 gb, since no one goes beyond that

You can thank Microsoft for that. Windows XP 32-bit can only run 3.25 GB of RAM. Maximum memory may be further limited by the operating system not being able to address the full range of physical memory. For 32-bit operating systems, Windows Vista and XP 32-bit editions can address approximately 3.3 GB. This limitation is present on all 32-bit hardware and 32-bit operating systems.

Nothing is wrong. Windows will not recognize 4 gigs of memory when running an O/S that is not a 64 bit version.

What OS are you running? (OS = Operating System)

It could be that your system can only handle 3.25 GB of ram. Check your manual regarding how much ram can your computer handle.
