Try an online checking account. Some of them offer very good rates, no setup or monthly fees, no minimum balance, free online bill-pay, check writing privileges and free external transfers.
Here is one to get you started:

I've had Wells Fargo for three years. It seems most people don't, but I like banking with them. As long as you don't get any overdrafts you'll be okay. I'm not sure what type of checking account you are looking for but they do have a free generic checking account. Or if you are in school you can get a college checking account, the only difference is with the college you can get free online bill-pay and qualify for more loans if needed. Whichever bank you choose, do not overdraft your account. I'm pretty sure every bank will mess you up that way (it's only one way but they make their money). If you aren't sure, look at the website. They have an updated status of your account than calling over the phone. Good luck.

I've been with Chase thru 3 buy outs. And everything I get P**** at them I shop around and they still have the best most reasonable checking programs. So I'm still at Brightbank,BankOne,Chase. Go to several banks in your area and see what they have. One I went to wanted 75 cents per transaction and If I deposited 15 checks at one time that was considered 15 transactions not one transaction. So needless to say I moved on.

The Best checking account is Everbank. They pay very high interest with their FreeNet checking account. Free checking, free checks, no ATM fees (100% rebate for any fees the terminal charges), plus it's a breeze to make deposits through the mail (also free - no postage). It is the best.

"Best" depends on what you're looking for. I've found that some of the best are with smaller regional banks or credit unions, not the big behemoths. By all means, avoid BofA.

Look for one without maintainance fees, with overdraft protection and possibly if you are lucky enough to have one in your area, one that is interest bearing.

US Bank
They give you a back-up supply after you bank with them for a while...........so you will never have any overdrafts.
