I'm sure there's javascript or html out there for this somewhere, but I've yet to find it.

I'm creating a website for one of my friends band's for christmas, and there's a lot of things that I will need from him before it is ready to be viewed by everyone. I'd like to password protect the site so that I can send him the link and the password, and he can view everything and see what I mean, rather than sending him a bunch of firefox documents and then later publishing them. (I hope that made sense)

Is there a way that I can do this?

Thanks!!

Usually when I develop sites I just use simple directory protection. I don't know which host you are using, but look into using the .htaccess file to password protect the directory the site is located in (if your site is running on for instance Apache, other webservers have similar solutions). Many hosts also allow you to do this from their control panel, contact your host to see if they have such a function. This will pop-up a username and password prompt when the site is accessed.

Sure, if your website allows access control to the files - if it doesn't then nope. Basically, you make the whole site or a folder private and issue permissions, but you have to have the right kind of supplier. Not a free account. It might be easier to set up a temporary free account somewhere and not tell anyone about it, except him. If there are no links to it search engines won't find it.

You're asking a lot. Jeez, someone went to the trouble of inventing and maintaining password protection, they should be paid for their work.

Hi, this Praveen (Sr. Technical Support Executive for AT&T ISP).

I guess you can do this. Once you create a website, add a page which asks for a password and once the password is entered the visitors can click on other links to access your website. For example try this website : www.praveen.com

Please note that this is not my website.

Please reach me on Kalekshang@yahoo.com or u can add me in yahoo messenger and i will be more than glad to assist you.

Regards.
Praveen
