I didn't think so. It was quite clear that Matarazzi was provoking him. I liked how Matarazzi flew in the air and acted like he was shot from a little head-butt.

He should have been aplauded and patted on the back for not taking it any further because Matarazzi asked for it, and by the way they don't deserve the championship!!

I would have shown a yellow to Materazzi for acting as if he got shot in the chest. Ridiculous. The decision to award a card is the referee's own. He could have given a verbal warning, a yellow card, or a red card. Given the circumstances, a red card was too harsh. There are plenty of other referees who would have issued a yellow. I would not be comfortable giving a red-card for a head-butt that I did not even see. Zidane had played a clean game up to that point.

Materazzi is a nasty player, but Zidane deserved the red card. In any situation any player cannot assault any of his opponents, let alone match officials. Yes, Materazzi said nasty things, and he deserved punishment, but it does not mean Zidane is allowed to headbutt him.
Apparently Zidane never learns from his experience. He is a matured player, but he also received many red cards during his career, most of the times because he got angry when people insult his family. He should not have done that.

Butt head Zidane had no right putting his team in that situation. Buck up and take it for the team is obviously not in his vocabulary. Best player on the team of course your going to be a target....deserved it and literally gave the game away.

Of course he he should have been red carded. Zizou could have easily been the bigger man (by ignoring Materazzi's provocations), led his team to beat Italy (which even after Zizou was sent off, France were still controlling the match with one man down), and probably scored that PK which Trezeguet missed. If anyone, it was Zizou who let his team down, and put his pride ahead of anything else that night.

A Big Yes, Absolutely.

Zidane has been red carded in another world cup before.

So sometimes he can control his temper very well, but when the atmosphere is very intense, he suffered.
