Read the book...any and all reading is good...is it's bad then you can put it down. Sometimes it has taken me over a week to read a book I didn't like much but then got into. Usually I am done in a day...two tops...3 if it's huge!
Peoples advice is something to consider but don't let it stop you. I have read books I realy liked that others didn't so read away!!
And I liked both of those books.

They are both great books (collection of books in some cases for Les Miz). Les Miz may be emotionally straining for some (even more than GWTW). Read them both. Better yet (later in life), make your children read Les Miz so that they know how good they have it.

Read them both, but GWTW rules! I read it 11 times before I was aged 11. Les Miz is very readable, but not better. Bone up on those classics!!! I just finished "To Kill a Mockingbird" (again), "In Cold Blood", "Doctor Zhivago", and am now reading "Wuthering Heights". All are also very good reads. If you can find any Truman Capote or Norman Mailer, grab it. Very good authors.

Whether it's better or not is only up to you. That's the beauty of literature and all art. Les Mis is however an extremely important and popular text.
Give it a try!
Glad you enjoyed GWTW!

I don't know if Les Miserables is better than Gone with the Wind, but they're both great books and well worth reading.

Read Les Miz in French and it is devine. The translated versions are flat and boring.

That's kind of comparing apples & oranges. Both great. If you like great literature, you'll like it. Try also A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith and The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.
