You also have to realize that football was a totally different game back then. The rules have changed and there is a lot more talent out there on the field these days, both making it very difficult to do what was done back then.

First, no one considers the dolphins the best team ever. Whenever the conversation comes up its always a 70s Steelers, 80s Niners, 60s Packers or 90s Cowboys teams that get mentioned. The Dolphins are like Emmitt Smith, yeah they have the record, but no thinks their the best. That dolphins team played a schedule with a combined winning % somewhere around .333. Having said all that (and getting back to your original question) yes, if the Pats go undefeated, I would put them as the best team ever. I'd even go so far as to put this current Pats run as the greatest dynasty in the history of the NFL. 4 Superbowls in 6 years and an undefeated season- thats beyond comparison.

And yes the games changed a lot but I think you can compare dominance within a era. We're not talking who would win between them, just which team was better at playing the game in the state is was in when they got there.

That doesn't mean anything. The game has changed very much since the 72 Dolphins. I'm not saying that the Pats will go undefeated and i'm not saying that they won't either.

The 2007 Patriots would crush the '72 Dolphins...Literally...Nobody acknowledges that todays players are probably about 50-75 pounds bigger on average than players back then...

Wait, the Cowboys will beat the Pats? Can someone refresh my memory on what happened in Dallas this year?

19-0. Best Team Ever.

72 dolphins went 14 and 0 ..i dont think the pats will have any problem beating that record. to get 4 more wins to tie all they got to do is beat philly, baltimore, pitt and jets. thats for a tie.i think they will go 19 and 0 and destroy Miamis record

I don't think we should compare things like this, the game has changed too much. It's like asking to compare Mike Tyson in his prime to Ali, no comparison... It was a completely different game.

Barry Sanders to Jim Brown (Or LT).

Back with the 72 Phins you didn't have 300lb linemen that can out run running backs. You didn't have 6'5 receivers that can jump to the moon. You didn't have every team with 10 guys that run sub 4.4.

OK. Back in July or August, I called it. When I saw the schedule, and the fact that they had picked up Thomas, Stallworth, Welker and of course, Moss, I told my next door neighbor they could go undefeated. And he didn't laugh in my face. I don't want to jinx it, but yes, they could go all the way undefeated.
