I think Michigan told him to leave.

He retired. My guess is they told him to leave on his own or they will fire him. He lost too many games to OSU lately. OSU fired Cooper for the same thing after all those losses to Michigan.

He retired...No way you fire a true Michigan man...the white shirts may have expressed (strongly) that the program needed to bring in some new blood. It's hard to sustain a program like Michigan. Expectations are too high. That's not just at Michigan, that's any major university. Few head coaches can stay successful for more than a decade at the same institution in today's world.

Well since he got an assistant athletic director job with Michigan, I think he just retired because he lost some of the passion. Takes a lot to do it year after year.

I've been wondering the same thing myself...it sounds to me like one of those situations that you see on TV:
BOSS: You're fired!
WORKER: Oh yeah?! You didn't fire me! I QUIT!!

After things cool off, the boss tells the worker that he can resign and no one has to know about their exchange.
It's not an impossible scenario!

It was apparent by the way he set up his contract and the contracts of his assistants last year that he had planned on this being his last year.

He didn't quit, nor was he forced to leave. He retired, there is a difference.
