Ok, I'm planning to go to Sydney and maybe Melbourne also next summer. Starting now, besides the cost of the trip, how much should I save up to be able to afford a moderately nice trip? I'm not looking to spend a fortune everyday I'm there. I was thinking of saving a $100 a month for the trip. What do you think? And, there are tons of books available on the subject of visiting Australia. Which is the best? Or is there a website that would be more informative, more accurate, or up to date? I want my trip to be enjoyable and worth every penny. I'd also like to know some cool gay-friendly places there as well. Thanks for your responses.

Saving $100 a month should be fine, because the currency rate between the US and AUS is like $1 to $.90 (give or take a few cents because the rate is always changing) I don't know of any places you could go, but just google whatever you want to find out about australia. I went there last summer, to both sydney and melbourne and it was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! you will have so much fun!
PS: it's winter there when it's summer here and in Melbourne
during the winter it rains a lot so remember warm clothes and an umbrella, but don't take just warm clothes because it is swimming weather as well.
PPS: In australia, tax is already included in the price and they don't have pennies so they either round up or down depending on your total.

I'm not 100% sure about costs but I do know that Melbourne is way better than Sydney! Pack for seriously hot weather though, I'm talking 100°F +
By the way, in Australia we get the **** taxed out of us so everything is round double or 3 times more than in the states.

Wow reading these responses most you guys didn't know all the good and cheap places to go. There are a lot of backpacker lodges and boarding houses that are cheap also very close to Oxford Street very much the area you would like to hang out also close to all of the Beaches. Anywhere around Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, would be your best areas in Sydney. There are a lot of no cover charge night clubs and cheap cafes and 100% gay friendly and 24/7

no way melbourne is better than sydney -sydney rocks!!
now, on the $$. i think your gonna run short of $ if you plan to spend only $100/day as a 3star hotel in kingscross costs just that in july -prices go up in dec-feb, as thats the aussie summer.
if you got that covered, then id say AU$100 is good so long u dont eat in fashion restaurants and go clubbing every night. that said, 10 months savings will buy you a decent 10 day break in oz!!!
have a good one!!

My parents went there a couple of years ago and they recommended that a full month is the minimum time you should stay for. take a look at hostels (pay no attention to those grotesque movies) for the cheapest accommodation, you can get further discounts at hostels if you are willing to share a room or work your stay. Make use of the railways, the roads in Australia are very poor but rail travel is very cheap and fairly reliable.

I would budget about 100 a day that you plan to be there. I was there this year and it is more expensive then I thought. I took 600 for two weeks (not including hotel, and travel) I ended up using my bank card alot. Food is alot more expensive then I thought it would be as well.
