I just saw a story on CNN about a Saudi woman who was gang raped. The result; she was sentenced to 6 months in prison and 200 lashes. Why is the West is so obsessed with portraying Islam as a positive force in the world? Does the rhetoric match reality? I know that there are all kinds of Muslims (devout, lapsed, practicing, in name only, etc.), but it seems to me, as a casual observer, that the more devout the Muslim, the more likely he is to be backwards and dangerous. Just look at the Middle East; by and large, it is fascist, autocratic or theocratic, women are subjugated and minorities persecuted. Islamic countries are rife with poverty and have been for centuries. Would any of you apologetics who are going to respond to this posting calling me a racist (confusing a religious ideology with a race) really choose to live in Riyad over the US? It seems to me that the Muslim world is a lot like 15th century Spain; backwards and cruel. Why pretend otherwise?

Saudi wahabiism is a radical fringe sect which is why the Al Sauds etc were placed in power in the 1920s by the Brits etc. as part of the age old imperial policy of 'divide and rule'.

The Saudis are our "friends",even though most insurgents in Iraq are Saudis. Most don't understand Islam.

added. The first answer is a good example. Those that take Islam to the extreme stick together, you attack their religion and they will band together against you. They put religion before country.

Are u kidding? the west is not obsessed with trying to portray Islam as positive... and not all Muslims are like that. the media makes it their business to get news stories like that to make Islam seem like a horrible religion.

I think you're generalizing and implying that the actions of certain Saudis exemplify the way Muslims live throughout the world.

It's PC to pretend that Islam is a religion of peace, when all the evidence verifies the opposite.
It isn't even really a religion, it is nothing except a plan for world domination.
