Fertilizer alone isn't the answer as too much fertilizer will increase thatch and bug diseases.
For thick turf you need to manage your grass correctly. Use grass seed suited to your site, full sun, good soil, water with at least 1" of water no more often than once a week, cut no shorter than 3", keep clippings on lawn, aerate every few years, topdress and overseed in the fall, add lime if needed as well as fertilizer.

Another good way is to add a thin layer of top dressing or even just top soil over the lawn, and then cover in seeds. This also has the added benefit of making your lawn feel less hard on the feet (our lawn was very compacted, and felt hard as a rock and lumpy!). Make sure to use seed appropriate for the level of sunlight -- if it is a shady spot you will need a special grass seed.
Watering and fertilizing will also help.

In the fall aerate your lawn (leave the cores to decay on the lawn -looks messy for a time but good for the lawn), use a thin coat of top dressing or compost (compost is better) then seed lightly. Too thick will choke your lawn. Fertilize with fall fertilizer - you'll have a golf green in spring!

yep.. that's it. Fertilizer.
Most turf grasses like a higher nitrogen fertilizer for growth and color. Apply this in the early spring.
For now, a winterizer product is a good idea. These are blended to allow more root growth. Winterizer now, and by spring, you should see thicker turf.
Oh.. and don't cut your grass too short- go to the highest setting. this allows for better health for the grass and helps block out weeds.

When choosing a fertiliser look for the letters NPK Nitrogen Phosophurus and Pottassium. Nitrogen for greeness, phosophurus for root growth and pottassium for strong leaf , helps prevent disease. Water, Spray for fungus and insects, aerate core, dethatch stops fungus, topdress add lime if required, do ph test should read 6.5 good luck
