Interesting clip. Reagan was still a Democrat when he gave that speech.

you can talk about how he ended the threat of nuclear Holocaust by out spending the u.s.s.r, the younger of you don't know about the threat the loomed over the western world during this time, in our day we had fire drills and earth quake drills in school but we also had the nuclear launch drill,
that's how real the threat was for all of us, but the biggest thing he gave America was optimism and pride, Nixon and Carter ruined the moral of the country, inflation was out of cont role, by the time Reagan left office Americans were proud to me Americans again, bush 41 was elected almost solely based on the success of the Reagan years, something Al Gore failed to do after Clinton, being a kid during Reagan's term all i saw on the news was how he was an idiot, and a war monger (sound familiar?) but as an adult learning about the man Ive found out that he was one of the greatest American presidents we have ever had, and the millions that pored into Washington proved that fact at his death, the media hated him but the country (for the most part) loved him

No better nor worse than anyone else. Reagan was as close to average American as it gets for conservatives. Even some liberals could identify with him and his policies. He was a very nice man. He had charisma and the gift of gab. He told good jokes and funny ones. Some of his policies, especially the economic ones, were a bit lame. His successor called those voodoo economics and was right about that. He was a cheer leader at a time when we, as a nation, needed cheering up. We could use a cheer leader again. He was an opportunist as well.
As a President, Ronald Reagan was about in the middle. There were many greater than him and many worse then him. He certainly wasn't a god as so many people want to believe.

Ronald Reagan was the embodiment of conservatism, but more importantly, he had the charisma of a true leader.
He had the ability to cause, even those who disagreed with him, to feel good about being an American..... Clinton, on the other hand.....

In my opinion Ronald Reagan as one hell of a a president,
together with Magaret Thatcher and Michael Gorbachov, these three statespeople brought about the end of the Cold War and that alone makes them unforgettable people in world history. Ronald Reagan was the leader of that negotiation and peope may make fun of him because of his bluffs ( after all he was 75 when he entered the white house)
but he helped save the West from hell on earth. May he rest in eternal peace.

Reagan was not a particularly great American, his example condoned the worst in us, elitism, racism, greed, untruthfulness and unlawfulness. He was also a purveyor of ignorance.
When reading a teleprompter, he did act the part of a President, though. He was the template from which the Republicans have cultivated the likes of the current president and wannabe Thompson - an empty suit and vessel around which they can build a mythologica PR campaign to present them as some cartoonish representation that will sell to the American public (ex. George W Bush, downhome cowboy, except that he was born and raised in Connecticut, went to elite private schools, and hates horses... bought his "ranch" just before announcing his bid for President).
However, this worshippers have been perversely driven to deify him since he left office. A cold, realistic view of history would show his accomplishments to be pretty minimal, overall.

Ronald Reagan was the greatest president of the 20th century. The country prospered under his leadership, and he defeated the greatest threat the world had ever known, up until the rise of the Islamo Facists. That threat was the Soviet Union.
And yes, he was a great American, and a true American, through and through. He loved this country, and made us remember why we love it, too.

Ronald Reagan brought an end to the cold war in Russia and caused "The Communist Wall" to be torn down. He did more for global democracy in a peaceful way than had ever or has ever been done. He was and is a hero.

For eight years Reagan played the role of a president as he had done in his movies. Yes he good for American if you were rich and powerful. As for the middle class or lower class you did not exist in the eyes of Reagan.
He tried to make things so happy just smile or as Nancy would say just say No!
Here man who tired to convince the public ketchup was a vegetable. Sold arms for hostages but forgot he did he it. When the AIDS crisis appeared Reagan failed to deal with the issue.

Well, passionate speaking can move anyone regardless of issue stance. Ronald Reagan at that time was going into it with fervor. but keep in mind he spawned most the Neo-Conservative silliness we see predominant in the Bush Administration. The Neos of today wrongfully use Reagan as their inspiration for the wrong reasons. I believe he did have it right but got toppled by the powers that be at that time.
I believe Ron Paul is much greater than Reagan. He is the last great politician in my opinion. He is the only one who stands for what he believes. This is very verifiable in his voting and speeches.
