There are four basic quantities in the structure of the Universe. These are as follows;
Mass = measured in kilograms
Angle= measured in degrees
Distance (space) =measured in meters
Time = measured in units of seconds
From these quantities we can analyse all natural phenomena.
What ever the process ,it can be broken down using dimensional analysis. This analysis relates to the four basic quantities outlined above.
The world of mathematics can represent an abstract volume called manifold. Relativity theory uses time relation to distance(space) to form an abstract model of space which at one time was called the Aether. Hence in the real world a volume is described by 3 dimensions. In a manifold a volume is described with a additional dimension called time, which is the fourth dimension of the manifold.
In String Theory model of the Universe the four dimensions of relativity were not sufficient to explain the processes of the Universe, hence have used up from eleven to 26 dimensions.
In the world of random variable any dimensions can be used depending on the number of radom variables.Hence to calculate a probability an intergration over a volume of "nth space "(n dimensions) is used.
However no matther how many dimensions are used to described a Universal scenario ,it still boils down to the four Basic quantities of the Universe.

With Einstein's theories of relativity it is now accepted that the fourth dimension is spacetime. He concluded that space & time are one in the same; which so far, has been predicted accurately using his equations.
I was confused when I first heard these tings too. It made me think of magical dimension in a fantasy movie or something like that. But basically, in mathematics, you can add variable for dimensions, and techinically, you can have a many as you want! Still confused? Think of it like this: in math class I'm sure you have seen x,y cordinate plane. That x and y are 2 dimensions! They can be anything! Time and distance, speed and time, money and product! Proportions of donuts eaten and fat gained! Any two things you wish to compare. In physics, our common reality dictates (up/down), (left-right) (forward/back), and we used that mathematically to determine things. But mathematics can be improved upon, and since physics examines our physcial world by using math, Einstein thought it proper to incorporate space and time, which were realized as being one thing, hence the extra dimension. String theory has 11 dimensions. Look that up! While intricate, it has not been proven.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Look it up on Wikipedia, but don't expect to understand it! BTW, time does not count as a dimension. Here's a simple test you can try to see how weird dimensions can be. Take a ribbon of paper and make a single half-twist and glue the ends together. Now take a pencil and draw around it without taking the pencil off of the surface: It only has one side!! It's not a trick, it's called a "mobius strip" (they even make rollercoasters with this shape) and is a two-dimensional object that you can hold in your hands.

It all depends on what you believe even in some religions there are more than 3. I saw this one documentary forgot what it was called, but it was about Iceland and how they think that the elves or elfs trolls and ghost etc. all come from other dimensions. I even heard on another documentary that maybe even ufos come from other dimensions. I think that maybe, just my opinion and only a posibility that these other dimensions are the other realms that some of our ancestors belifed in. Like in Norse mythology the Yggdrasil or in Mesoamerica the world tree represented by the ceiba tree etc. Hope this might help a bit
