the majority of the populace isn't "stupid"....they are just indifferent to the problems...and even more indifferent to politics.

Essentially...they just don't care enough to get involved.

Of course that mindset changes rapidly when the problems hit home.

Americans don't like to face the fact that we are a TV addicted nation. Our opinions, lifestyles, and perspectives are based almost solely on what we learn from the box. A major step in the right direction would be to take back the airwaves. They belong to us, the people. Of course, no serious politician would dare suggest such a thing, there would indeed be a revolution. The internet has kind of helped, providing a vast variety, but lately it's like we have just traded one mind-controlling box for another. And for those who think they can watch what they won't and it has no affect - tell that to the thousands of marketing execs who earn degrees in controlling your mind and then make a living putting what they have learned into practice or to the corporations who spend millions on marketing. Their time and money is not wasted because they KNOW it works.

I don't believe it is a stupid, retarded, gullible and politically ignorant population that is to blame. Sometimes the choice they have , of those running to represent them , is the problem. So long as the selection of candidates is based within the heirarchy of the political parties, and the money support comes from the party, only those who can afford to run will determine who will be chosen.Your choice is either/or.

There is a difference between stupid and politically ignorant. We are not stupid but there are way too many that are politically ignorant.
I blame the media.
Example: taking an obscure quote meant to generate publicity for a book and trying to "create" facts from it by pulling any hardcore dem from the floorboards they could find and pushing for their "intepretation". MSNBC has been doing this since last night. If this crap doesn't make political ignorance, nothing will.

American's were bred to be the compliant pleebs they are by corporate America. You want to change things from that perspective you would need to break the grip of Federal money on public schools. The education system is broken for the same reason the military, healthcare, and prison (oh excuse me "corrections") systems are. Strong Centralized government always emerges as the muscle behind men of real wealth and power.

Have you seen the kids this country is raisig lately?? You just wait until they get in their 20's, you think it's bad now. Sure, they can text message their asses off and they can work an Xbox like you wouldn't believe but when it comes to things like commoon sense, basic math, basic english, simple reasoning skills etc etc, we are screwed!

The other problem is too many foreigners moving here, that have no patriotic interest in this country. They come here to make money and send that money back to their home nations or to get a good university education and then take that knowledge back home.

But hell, we don't care as long as we have a working credit card, it's all good!

Simple. We have to raise the average level of intellect (through increased access to education, research into education methods, and development of advanced curriculum). If we can raise the bar high enough, then those that currently fall in the lower 50th percentile, will probably be as smart as those who currently fall between the 50th and 70th percentile.

The problem, as you probably noted, is that no matter how high you raise the average intellect, there will always be an 80th percentile wondering why almost everybody is so dumb.

It's not stupidy but ignorance and lethargy and the belief that the gov't will fix everything for us. We stopped paying attention to what they are doing and focused on Britney Spears etc.
One man put it very succinctly when he answered my question saying I was asking for national regeneration. We need to stand up and recognize that our attentions are being diverted while our quality of life continues on a hugely rapid decline.

"xuser" has it right. Indifference is worse than stupidity, and even more dangerous.
Part of the problem also is lack of humility. Walking around with the "everyone is stupid" perspective accomplishes nothing whatsoever.
